Indication
Codeinum is a pain relief medicine. Codeinum belongs to a group of medicines called opioids. They mimic endorphins, those are naturally occurring pain reducing.
Codeinumcombines with the opioid receptors in the brain and blocks the transmission of pain signals.
Codeinum can be used for diarrhoea treatment, because of it's constipating side effect.
Codeinum is contained in some cough medicines (see codeine phosphate, linctus) in low doses.
Precautions
Do not use Codeinum in case of:
-alcoholism;
-failure of function of part of the gut causing an obstruction (paralytic ileus);
-head injury;
-increased pressure in the brain (raised intracranial pressure);
-slow, shallow breathing (respiratory depression);
-sudden asthma attack;
-if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients.
Please, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy.
If you start to experience an allergic reaction, stop using Codeinum and inform your doctor immediately.
Drug Interactions
Codeinum should not be taken with MAOI anti-depressants and during two weeks after they have been stopped.
When Codeinum is used together with ritonavir the blood level may be increased.
Together with other drugs that have a sedative effect on the central nervous system: alcohol, sleeping drugs, antidepressant drugs and antihistamines, drowsiness will be increased.
Side effects
-Changes in mood
-Drowsiness
-Slow, shallow breathing (respiratory depression)
-Addiction to the medicine (dependence)
-Skin rashes
-Low blood pressure (hypotension)
-False perceptions of things that are not really there (hallucinations)
-Nausea and vomiting
-Constipation

Note
Codeinum may cause drowsiness. If affected do not drive or operate machinery. Avoid alcoholic drink.
