Indication
Paracetamol contains two active ingredients, paracetamol and codeine phosphate. Paracetamol is used in the treatment of mild to moderate pain. Paracetamol is also useful for reducing fever.
Codeine belongs to group of medicines called opioids. Opioids mimic the effects of naturally occurring pain reducing chemicals (endorphins) that are found in the brain and spinal cord. They act on the opioid receptors in the brain and block the transmission of pain signals.
Paracetamolis used to reduce fever and to relieve mild to moderate pain caused by a variety of conditions (eg headache, toothache, neuralgia, migraine, period pains).

Precautions
- In cases of overdose of Paracetamol, seek immediate advice from a doctor.
- Alcohol increases the risk of liver damage that can occur if an overdose of Paracetamol is taken. The hazards of Paracetamol overdose are greater in persistant heavy drinkers and in people with alcoholic liver disease.
- If symptoms persist for more than three days consult your doctor.
- Don't take other preparations also containing paracetamol.
- The effervescent or dispersable preparation contains sodium. Care must be taken in individuals on a low sodium diet.
- In pack sizes over 32 Paracetamol is only available on prescription.
Use with caution in
- Decreased kidney function
- Decreased liver function
- Non-cirrhotic alcoholic liver disease
Not to be used in
- Children under 12 years of age
- Severely decreased kidney function
- Severely decreased liver function
Paracetamol should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy.
If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using Paracetamol and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
- Paracetamol is not recommended for use in pregnancy unless considered essential by your doctor. Seek medical advice from your doctor.
- Paracetamol passes into breast milk. Seek medical advice from your doctor before using this medicine during breastfeeding.

Label warnings
- Do not take more than 2 at any one time. Do not take more than 8 in 24 hours.
- Do not take Paracetamol with any other products containing Paracetamol.
- Paracetamol is available without prescription, only when supplied in small quantities.

Side effects
The following side effect can be caused while taking Paracetamol:
- Constipation
- Drowsiness
- Nausea
- Blood disorders
- Damage to the liver
- Skin rashes
- Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
The side effects listed above may not include all of the side effects of Paracetamol reported by the drug's manufacturer.

Drug Interactions
An excessive intake of alcohol may increase the damage to the liver when taken with Paracetamol.
Cholestyramine may reduce the absorption of Paracetamol from the gut.
Metaclopramide may increase the effects of paracetamol.
Paracetamol may alter the blood thinning effects of warfarin and other anti-coagulant medicines. Regular monitoring should be performed.
